Automaker accused of knowing about faulty seat belts

NEW YORK (CNNfn) -- Federal officials will reportedly ask the U.S. Justice Department to penalize Honda for allegedly withholding information about faulty seat belts in 1986 to 1991 model-year cars and trucks.
USA Today reported on Thursday that the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration believes Honda knew there were safety problems in seat belts it was later forced to recall. The company recalled 8.9 million cars and trucks in 1995 after the seat belts were found to unexpectedly open or fail to open.
Federal law requires auto companies to inform the government of safety problems they know about.
Honda spokesman Jeffrey Smith told the newspaper that the company had heard nothing official about the NHTSA's plans.
