Reports: automaker to reduce vehicle manufacture to 5 days
|
LONDON (CNNfn) - Toyota plans to greatly reduce the time customers have to wait for a new car, with reports Friday suggesting Japan's largest automaker will be able to make a vehicle inside five days after taking an order.
That would be a significant decline for a business where DaimlerChrysler claims the industry record with an average 10-12 days from order to assembly.
Some industry experts questioned such a short time frame, pointing out that it could encourage more last-minute orders and cause distribution problems.
The new system, based on sophisticated computer software, is to be introduced on one production line in September at a plant in the Canadian province of Ontario. If it proves successful, the new manufacturing process will be extended to the rest of the company's model range.
To adapt to the new system, Toyota will have to reconfigure parts of its components ordering and distribution system.
