NEW YORK (CNNfn) - Investors poured into Dell Computer in after-hours trade Thursday after the company reported better than expected earnings to lead a strong tech stock showing.
Shares of Dell (DELL: Research, Estimates) rose nearly 6 percent in after-hours trading, easily erasing a slight loss in regular trading, on the strength of a fiscal first-quarter profit that beat the Street. Shares of the world's second-largest personal computer maker were up 3-5/16 to 48 as the most active issue on Island ECN and 3-1/8 to 47-13/16 on MarketXT, where it was second most heavily traded issue.
Building on the day's tech surge, Compaq (CPQ: Research, Estimates) saw its volume soar in after-hours trading, although shares remained mostly stagnant. The world's largest PC maker, which recently ceded U.S. leadership to Dell, dropped 1/8 to 26-7/8 as the most active issue on MarketXT.
Trading in Draxis Health Inc. (DRAX: Research, Estimates) shot up after-hours as investors seized on the late-day news that it had received Canadian regulatory approval to market its Iodine-125 BrachySeed for the treatment of prostate cancer. Shares of the diversified specialty pharmaceutical company rose 1/32 to 2-11/32 on Island, where it was the second most active issue.
Shares of JDS Uniphase (JDSU: Research, Estimates) dropped 1/8 to 86-3/8 on Island, where it the fourth most popular issue. Interest in the company was fostered when Donaldson, Lufkin & Jenrette started coverage of the optical-equipment industry today, rating JDS Uniphase as a "buy."
Volume in Biomet Inc. (BMET: Research, Estimates) also spiked in reaction to analyst comments. Biomet was the third most heavily traded issue on MarketXT as Bear Stearns today reiterated its "buy" rating on the orthopedic device company. BMET was down 3/8 to 35-9/16.
