First-time state unemployment benefit claims increase by 6,000

NEW YORK (CNNfn) - The number of Americans filing new claims for unemployment benefits rose to 284,000 in the week ended May 20 from a revised 278,000 the prior week, the U.S. Department of Labor said Thursday.
The four-week moving average of claims, which generally provides a more
accurate picture of jobless trends, rose to 291,000 for the May 20 week from 290,500 the week before.
The four-week moving average has been under 300,000 for 31 straight weeks. However, it is at its highest since 293,750 in the week ended Jan. 8.
Continued claims rose to 1,957,000 for the May 13 week, the latest data available, from the revised 1,952,000 the previous week.
No states reported an increase in claims of more than 1,000 in the week ended May 13, the latest period for which the data are available.
