Report: ING in lead for Aetna's financial and international biz
|
NEW YORK (CNNfn) - ING Groep NV is back in the lead in the race for Aetna's financial services and internationals units, a deal which could be worth $7.75 billion, The Wall Street Journal Interactive Edition reported Wednesday.
The deal will include a substantial amount of debt, the Journal reported, citing people familiar with the situation.
Last week it was reported that at least six companies were bidding for parts of the insurance power and the company had answered preliminary expressions of interest from at least four of them, including American International Group (AIG: Research, Estimates) and Citigroup Inc. (C: Research, Estimates) of the United States, Allianz of Germany and Aegon (AEG: Research, Estimates) of the Netherlands.
Until then Aetna (AET: Research, Estimates) was believed to be negotiating exclusively with ING, but ING was still said to be interested in the financial and international concerns.
The Journal's sources said another bidder could still emerge since the deal is not finalized and more details need to be worked out.
A spokeswoman for Hartford-Conn.-based Aetna told the Journal the company continues to talk to ING and other parties, while ING officials declined to comment.
Shares of Aetna rose 9/16 to 70-1/2 Wednesday.
