AOL will use RealSystem 8 Net media software throughout network
|
NEW YORK (CNNfn) - America Online Inc. will use RealNetworks Inc.'s Internet media software throughout its network, RealNetworks said Thursday, continuing a beneficial relationship for the Internet media company.
AOL will make RealNetworks' RealSystem 8 Internet media software, which allows users to download audio and video files, available to all of its customers and include the software as part of its AOL 6.0 service, due out later this year.
AOL - which has agreed to acquire CNNfn's parent company Time Warner Inc. (TWX: Research, Estimates) - and RealNetworks have a long-standing software-distribution relationship that analysts have said benefits RealNetworks.
Though RealNetworks (RNWK: Research, Estimates) didn't disclose specifics of the deal, it said it will include software with its RealPlayer that lets users sign up for AOL (AOL: Research, Estimates) service.
The companies also said they are working together to use RealSystem 8 in the Web-cast of CBS Corp. (CBS: Research, Estimates)'s popular "Big Brother" television show.
Shares in Seattle-based RealNetworks were up 3-5/8 to 50-3/8 in Thursday morning trading. Shares of Dulles, Va.-based AOL, the world's largest Internet-service provider, were up 1/2 to 57-1/2.
