Consider younger or older job candidates in tight labor market

NEW YORK (CNNfn) - Dear Jane: We are having a heck of a time finding good workers. I've spent hundreds of dollars on ads, posted jobs online and asked everyone for referrals. Help!
Finding good help in this labor market is tough. Try broadening your search to include younger and older workers. Call the career development center of all the local community colleges and high schools.
Explore the older end of the spectrum, as well. There are plenty of semi-retired and early-retired folks waiting to be tapped. Many people are looking for a part-time job to supplement their retirement income. Advertise in the alumni newsletters and magazines of schools that fit your industry. Offer your current employees a cash bonus if they recruit a good worker.
When you are small, you can offer people flexible hours, alternative benefits and a more casual work environment. Even a 12-year-old can open and sort the mail. Put your kids on the payroll and you can pay them up to around $5,000 without paying any payroll tax. Check with your tax adviser or accountant for the details.
