Companies shut down auctions for mailing list, citing privacy concerns

NEW YORK (CNNfn) - Citing concerns about privacy issues, Yahoo! Inc. and eBay Inc. shut down auctions for a mailing list of 200,000 U.S. investors, the Wall Street Journal reported Tuesday.
Market Logistics Group Inc., a direct-marketing company that caters to small-capitalization, publicly held companies, solicited bids on both Yahoo!'s (YHOO: Research, Estimates) and eBay's (EBAY: Research, Estimates) sites last week for an investor mailing list that included names, addresses and telephone numbers, the newspaper reported.
An executive at Yahoo auctions said the company removed the auction listing because it violated its terms of service by offering to sell personal data, the Journal said. He also pointed out to the newspaper hat the sale technically wasn't an auction, but more of an invitation to purchase an item of infinite quantity at the company's website.
An eBay spokesman said the company does not allow the sale of bulk e-mail lists through its service and is sensitive to the privacy concerns of its users, the newspaper said.
Market Logistics did not return calls from the Journal.
Concerns about Internet privacy were heightened earlier this year when DoubleClick (DCLK: Research, Estimates proposed offering a database combining information about Web site visitors.
