New search engine cannot distinguish legal from pirated music files

NEW YORK (CNNfn) - America Online will pull the plug on a new search engine that now allows Web surfers to access MP3 music files that include pirated versions of some songs, The Wall Street Journal reported Thursday.
The search engine, found on the Web site of AOL's Winamp music division, can not distinguish between legal and illegal MP3 files, an AOL spokesman told the Journal.
The availability of pirated music creates an awkward situation for AOL, given its impending merger with Time Warner, the parent of Warner Music Group, which is a part of a group of major record labels suing upstart Web sites like Napster for providing distribution of pirated files. Time Warner is also the parent of CNNfn.com.
