Weekly jobless claims rise

293,000 first-time filings reported in latest week, up from 275,000

NEW YORK (CNNfn) - The number of Americans filing new claims for unemployment benefits rose to 293,000 in the week ended Aug. 5 from a revised 275,000 the prior week, the U.S. Department of Labor said Thursday. Economists polled by Briefing.com had forecast U.S. jobless claims of 285,000 for the week.
The four-week moving average of claims, however, which generally provides a more accurate picture of jobless trends, fell to 288,500 in the Aug. 5 week from a revised 295,250 the previous reporting period.
Continued claims rose to 2,092,000 for the July 29 week, the latest data available, from a revised 2,090,000 in the prior period.
No states reported an increase in claims of more than 1,000.
