Unemployment claims up 10,000 but about in line with Wall St. forecasts

NEW YORK (CNNfn) - The number of Americans filing new claims for unemployment benefits rose to 299,000 last week from a revised 289,000 the prior week, the government reported Thursday.

Economists polled by Briefing.com had forecast U.S. jobless claims of 300,000 for the period.

The four-week moving average of claims, which generally provides a more accurate picture of jobless trends, fell to 306,000 in the week ended Sept. 30 from a revised 309,000 the prior week, the Labor Department said.

Continued claims fell to 2,153,000 for the Sept. 23 week, the latest data available, from a revised 2,167,000 in the prior period.

No states reported an increase in claims of more than 1,000 in the week ended Sept 23, the latest period for which the data are available. Back to top
