NEW YORK (CNNfn) - The number of Americans filing new claims for

unemployment benefits were reported at 306,000 for the week ended Oct. 7, up from a revised 301,000 the week before, the government reported Thursday. Jobless claims are at their highest level since Sept. 16, when they reached 310,000.

Economists polled by Briefing.com had forecast U.S. jobless claims of 302,000 for the period.

accurate picture of jobless trends, was 301,500 in the week ended Oct. 7, down from a revised 306,500 the prior week, the Labor Department said.

Continued claims were 2,168,000 for the Sept. 30 week, the latest data

available, up from a revised 2,138,000 in the prior period.

In the Sept. 30 week, four states reported an increase in claims of 1,000 or more, led by California with 2,125 new applications. California had no comment on the reasons.

In the same week, two states reported a decrease in claims of 1,000 or more. North Carolina headed the list with 3,072 fewer claims, attributing the decline to fewer layoffs in the textile, furniture, and  lumber and wood industries. Back to top
