Report: Brand could go as General Motors restructures lagging car division
|
NEW YORK (CNNfn) - General Motors is expected on Tuesday to announce a restructuring plan of its Oldsmobile division that could eventually lead to a phasing out of the brand, according to a published report.
Citing people familiar with the plans, the Wall Street Journal reported the restructuring late Monday on it Web site.
General Motors has scheduled a satellite broadcast with all of its U.S. dealers for 10:30 a.m. ET Tuesday with a press conference to follow at 11 a.m., according to the newspaper. GM declined to comment on the events.
GM maintains six main U.S. marketing divisions. Besides Oldsmobile, the company builds cars and trucks under the Chevrolet, Cadillac, Buick, Pontiac, and GMC brand names.
GM announced last week that it was cutting production to slash bloated inventory levels and get supply in line with expected slower demand.
Sources blame lagging sales for the impending changes at Oldsmobile. The unit is the weakest of GM brands with 2000 sales down 18.5 percent through November. Olds officials have said the division's profitability is below where it should be, the newspaper said.
