Pre-Christmas filings well below economists' forecast; down by 23,000

NEW YORK (CNNfn) - The number of Americans filing new claims for unemployment benefits fell the week before the Christmas holiday to 333,000 from a revised 356,000 the prior week, the Labor Department reported Thursday.
The figure for the week ended Dec. 23 came in well below forecasts of 351,000, according to a Reuters survey of economists.
The government's four-week moving average of claims, seen as providing a more accurate picture of jobless trends, fell to 340,750 from a revised 347,750.

Continued claims were reported at 2,337,000 for the Dec. 16 week, the latest period for which data are available, from a revised 2,305,000 in the prior period.
Twelve states reported an increase in claims of more than 1,000 in the week ended Dec. 16, the latest period for which the data are available. Topping the list was Illinois, with 5,077, followed by Indiana at 4,201, Kansas at 2,953, Florida at 2,855, and Missouri at 2,649.
