FCC says ads for Fox's adult-themed reality show are too racy for children
|
WASHINGTON (CNNfn) - A spokesman for Fox television said Thursday the network would pull promotion advertisements for its adult-themed show "Temptation Island" from certain programs that are watched by children.
The decision came after the Federal Communications Commission sent a letter to Rupert Murdoch, chief executive of NewsCorp. (NWS: Research, Estimates) -- the parent company of Fox -- raising objections to the promotional advertisements.
FCC Commissioner Gloria Tristani said the ads for the program, broadcast on Fox, are "inappropriate."
A so-called reality show -- much like the recent CBS hit "Survivor" -- "Temptation Island" features unmarried couples brought to a tropical resort, separated from one another and then filmed while being wooed by singles. The show has been a ratings bonanza for the network.
"After a careful review of our marketing plan, we have determined that Fox has on a limited number of occasions aired promotions for 'Temptation Island' during shows that we have classified as family oriented," said Robert Quicksilver, a spokesman for Fox.
His statement said the ads would be pulled from the following Fox shows: "The Simpsons," "Malcolm in the Middle," "Futorama" and "King of the Hill."
In her letter, Tristani said parents had complained about the ads. She also cited a recent Federal Trade Commission report on marketing to children and the movie industry's voluntary agreement to cease advertising violent or overtly sexual material to children. She urged Fox to "reevaluate its advertising scheme for "Temptation Island."
