Sales of new one-family houses in February 2001 were at a seasonally adjusted annual rate of 911,000 according to estimates released today by the U.S. Census Bureau and the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development. This is 2 (+/-9) percent below the revised January 2000 rate of 933,000, but 1(+/-10) percent above the February 2000 rate of 905,000.
The median sales price of new houses sold in February 2001 was $167,000; the mean sales price was $210,900. At the end of February, the seasonally adjusted estimate of new houses for sale was 311,000. This represents a supply of 4.1 months at the current sales rate.
Through February of this year, there were 150,000 houses sold compared with 149,000 sold during the same period last year. This is a increase of 1 (+/-7) percent.
