NEW YORK (CNNfn) - Feeder airline Comair will be laying off 2,000 employees in an effort to defray costs from an ongoing pilots strike.

The company said Friday the pilots strike, which began March 26, has "forced (Comair) to move forward with layoffs of its valued employees."

The move will affect half of Comair's non-striking employees and workers in all areas of the company will be affected.

"Unfortunately, with no revenue coming in for 33 days now, the economic reality has set in and we are forced to take these regrettable, but necessary steps," said Randy Rademacher, president of Comair, in a statement.

"We have been able to pay our people in full with benefits for seven weeks. That's unprecedented for a company of our size, but we simply could not sustain it any longer."

Comair is a wholly-owned subsidiary of Delta Airlines, (DAL: up $0.50 to $44.54, Research, Estimates) which was carrying about 25,000 passengers a day on more than 800 flights before it was grounded by the strike March 26.

The company on Wednesday held its first negotiating session since the strike. graphic
