NEW YORK (CNNfn) - The number of new U.S. claims for state unemployment benefits fell to 428,000 last week from a revised 440,000 the prior week, the Labor Department reported Thursday.

Analysts surveyed by Briefing.com had forecast new claims of 425,000 for the week ended June 9.

The four-week moving average of new claims, considered a better gauge of jobless trends, rose to 424,500 from the previous week's 415,500 and the highest level since Aug. 8, 1992, when it reached 445,500.

Economists watch the four-week moving average more closely since it smoothes fluctuations in the weekly data.

Continued claims -- those by workers who already have claimed at least a week of benefits – rose to about 2.93 million in the week ended June 2, the latest data available, from a revised 2.98 million the previous week graphic
