WASHINGTON (CNN) - United Parcel Service and Federal Express said they planned to resume air shipments Thursday.

A spokesman at the UPS air hub in Louisville, Ky., told CNN that the company expects to run a full air operation Thursday evening and to deliver all packages by Friday morning.

"This evening we'll put all aircraft up in the air," said the spokesman, Mark Giuffre.

He said most airports used by UPS had already been cleared to open, and that while a few airports were still closed, the company had contingency plans to land nearby.

UPS moves 3.2 million packages a day by air.

Federal Express issued a press release from its Memphis, Tenn., headquarters saying it plans to begin air operations Thursday afternoon, and is "optimistic" that nearly normal operations can resume Friday "to the extent that safety precautions and regulatory agencies allow."

The company warned that some shipments may continue to experience delays.

All commercial air operations, including air cargo, were shut down Tuesday. graphic
