NEW YORK (CNNfn) - An initial study pegs costs of the terrorist attacks to the information technology and communications industry will be about $15.8 billion, according to technology researcher Computer Economics.
The study, which is still being organized and is based on interviews with IT and communication workers, said the immediate impact would be about $1.7 billion with 25,000 people working to ensure continuity of service.
Over the long-term Computer Economics estimates $8.1 billion in costs to end-user organizations, with banking and financial services companies being hardest hit. The company said it is likely 100,000 "information intensive workers" will be relocated to temporary and new facilities all of whom will require IT equipment.
The study also estimates $6 billion in infrastructure costs as many facilities have been destroyed.
