WASHINGTON (CNN) - Bridgestone-Firestone agreed Thursday to recall 3.5 million more Firestone Wilderness AT tires at the request of the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration.

Firestone said it will not contest the recall and will replace the tires at no cost to consumers

The NHTSA said an investigation determined that a safety defect exists in Firestone Wilderness AT tires sizes P235/75R15 and P255/70R16, manufactured before May 1998.

The tires were used as original equipment on Ford Explorers, Mercury Mountaineers and some Ford Ranger pickup trucks.

The tires are from the Joliette, Quebec, and Wilson, N.C., factories and the recall applies only to sport/utility vehicle tires and not pickup trucks.

The previous recall was for all Wilderness AT and ATX tires from the Decatur, Ill. plant.

"The American public is well served by removing defective products from the road without delay," NHTSA Administrator Jeffrey W. Runge said.  "We are pleased that Firestone has taken this approach in lieu of lengthy court proceedings, moving us quickly to a safe solution."  graphic
