Revolving door: Washington to Wall Street

Former House Majority Leader Eric Cantor is headed to Wall Street. See who else has jumped the political ship for a lucrative career in finance.

Timothy Geithner

  • Government Gigs: Treasury Secretary; President of the Federal Reserve Bank of New York
  • Wall Street Career: Private equity executive, Warburg Pincus

Unlike Treasury Secretaries before him who made millions on Wall Street prior to public sector life, Geithner was a not a rich man when he took the job.

The longtime government employee started at the U.S. Treasury in 1988 before moving to a leadership role at the International Monetary Fund and then helming the Federal Reserve Bank of New York.

But earlier this year, Geithner cashed out and joined the private equity firm Warburg Pincus, where he works on strategy, management, and investing. While his compensation at the company isn't known, chances are that it's many multiples of the $199,700 he made as Treasury Secretary.
