The California State Controller's Office currently holds more than $6.1 billion in unclaimed property belonging to about 17.6 million individuals and organizations.
While much of the stash is forgotten cash, some of it includes physical items left in abandoned safety deposit boxes, such as nearly 20 pounds of gold bars, valued at roughly $375,000.
