No longer just a suburb of Albuquerque, Rio Rancho is now New Mexico's third-largest -- and fastest-growing -- city. Founded in the 1960s, it's also one of the state's youngest towns. Most public buildings, including the hospital, sports arena and City Hall, are all relatively new. A university and community college are also in the works.
Tech is big here. Intel, which has operated a chipmaking plant in Rio Rancho since the 1980s, is by far the largest employer. And Hewlett-Packard recently opened a customer service center.
A spate of foreclosures in the city helped send home prices about 15% lower over the past few years, although prices have since started to stabilize.
