A $15 minimum wage is 'daunting'

Seattle just passed a $15 minimum wage bill, and San Francisco will vote on one in November. It's a hot topic among lawmakers around the country, and business owners are concerned.

I'd have to look at layoffs

  • Business: Brownies Hardware
  • Location : San Francisco

Stephen Cornell owns Brownies Hardware, a San Francisco fixture since 1905, which his family bought into nearly 65 years ago.

Cornell has 12 employees and starts them at $12.50 an hour -- above San Francisco's current minimum wage of $10.74 an hour.

"I'd be competing with companies just outside of San Francisco that pay workers $8 an hour [California's state minimum wage]," he said about his city's likely passage of a $15 minimum wage.

He said he may have to look at cutting back on hours, overtime and vacation time.

Cornell has never laid off an employee, but he can't say that about the future.
