NEW YORK (CNNfn) - The number of Americans filing new claims for unemployment benefits rose to 306,000 in the week ended June 24 from a revised 304,000 the prior week, the U.S. Department of Labor said Thursday.

U.S. economists surveyed by Briefing.com had forecast jobless claims of 295,000 for the period.

graphicThe four-week moving average of claims, which generally provides a more accurate picture of jobless trends, rose to 305,250 for the June 24 week from a revised 301,250 for the prior reporting period.

The four-week average is the highest since July 17, 1999, when it was 305,250.

Continued claims were reported at 2,078,000 for the June 17 week, the latest data available, up from a revised 2,035,000 reported for the prior week.

California and Massachusetts reported sharp rises in claims, 3,026 more in California and 1,478 in Massachusetts. California attributed its jobless claims to layoffs in agriculture, and Massachusetts attributed its claims to layoffs in the service industry.

Tennessee, New York and Missouri, on the other hand, reported drops in claims.  Tennessee had 1,636 fewer claims, New York 1,550 fewer and Missouri 1,123 fewer. Back to top
